Welcome, and thank you for stopping by! This blog is for the grown-ups who share books, bedtime and big imaginations with children: parents, grandparents, teachers, librarians and homeschoolers. If you have ever wondered how to make read-aloud time calmer, what to say when a child asks why the dinosaurs disappeared, or how to turn a closet into an adventure, you are in the right place.

This page is a short guide to getting the most out of the blog. Choose the path that matches your situation today.

What this blog is about

We believe a few simple habits do more for a child than any gadget: reading together, telling stories, playing pretend and being curious about the world. Everything here is meant to help you build those habits in a way that fits a real, busy household or classroom. The writer, S.W. Fowler, is a children’s author, so the advice comes from someone who spends her days thinking about what keeps young readers turning pages.

Find your starting point

“We want a calmer bedtime”

Start with our guide to building a bedtime reading habit your kids love. More are in Bedtime & Routines.

“My child doesn’t like reading”

Take a breath: it’s common and fixable. Read what to do when your child says reading is boring, and then how long a 7-year-old should read each day for realistic expectations.

“We’re ready for longer books”

Our parent’s guide to moving from picture books to chapter books explains the signs of readiness and how to ease the change. For more, browse Reading Together.

“My child is dinosaur-mad”

Wonderful! Read why kids love dinosaurs and how to use it for learning, then visit the Free Activities page for hands-on ideas by age.

“I’m a teacher or homeschooler”

Go straight to our Teacher & Classroom Guide, with discussion questions, vocabulary and activities for group read-alouds.

The seven areas of the blog

How we try to help

You will not find padding here. Articles give you things you can do tonight: a short script for a tricky conversation, a ten-minute activity with materials from the recycling bin, or questions to ask after a chapter. We explain our standards in the Editorial Policy, and we correct mistakes openly.

The book behind the blog

S.W. Fowler’s adventure The Closet Jungle follows brothers Reid and Josh, who find a world of dinosaurs behind their closet door. It is the spark for many of the ideas here, but you never need it to use the blog. If you are curious, see Behind the Book or the official book page.

Make it easy on yourself

You do not need to read everything, and you do not need to try every idea. Here is a gentle way to use the blog without adding another task to your list:

  1. Choose one problem. Pick the single thing that would help most this week, such as a smoother bedtime or a reluctant reader.
  2. Try one idea for a week. Small, steady changes stick better than big overhauls.
  3. Notice what your child enjoys. Keep what works, drop what does not, and adjust for your child’s age and personality.
  4. Come back for the next step. Each article links to related ones, so you can go deeper when you are ready.
